How Service Providers Can Enable New Revenue-Generating Capabilities at Speed

In the second blog of the series, Dominic Elliott, CTO, Service Provider – EMEAR at Cisco, shares his thoughts on how ISPs can keep pace with accelerating technological innovation.

To address the demands of the future, service providers will need to ensure they can enable super-efficient pipe provision together with an underpinning network fabric that makes it easy for enterprise customers to consume services in a secure and efficient way.

Here at Cisco we’ve been focused on delivering the capabilities that service providers are looking for.

Firstly, we’ve focused on the simplification of the network through the integration of optical aggregation technologies that optimise the way the infrastructure works – leveraging the lower power consumption, heat output and footprint reductions this generates to strip out the cost associated with mass-scale networking. By converging IP and optical layers, we’re making it possible for service providers to simplify how networks are built and initiate a new converged architecture that offers up to a 45% saving in TCO.

Next, we’ve leveraged automation and virtualisation technologies that make it easier for service providers to respond fast to the demands of customers, initiating new services and capabilities in a highly programmable way.

With all this programmability comes rich analytics that support better capacity planning decisions and deliver insights about potential network issues that make it possible for service providers to offer customers truly robust SLAs. Plus, enterprise customers can now get the analytics and application data they need to understand how their estate is performing.

Finally, when it comes to the edge of the network we’ve seen a growing need for edge technologies in the IoT space and other arenas that allow mission-critical applications to be delivered with low latency and high performance at the edge. Plus the need for caching and content optimisation for the myriad of video services that are increasingly part and parcel of the consumer and B2B domains.

By investing in the development of next-generation networks, we’re creating a rich choice of options for service providers. Now you can run your environment in your own private production data centre or in the public cloud and deliver managed services any which way you will across a multitude of channels. All of which is critical in a world where SaaS consumption has become an established mega trend.

Ultimately, our goal has been to create the building blocks for a network of the future that offers huge scalability, a massive reduction in OPEX, and the ability to launch new services fast and consistently across a number of platforms.

In other words, we’re making it easier for service providers to journey towards a new cloud-based SaaS driven model that will enable service providers to leverage better margins – and remain relevant as customer demands evolve.
